Any have a Dux bed? Is it worth over $4000?

I have tried five mattresses in three years, including the Tempuer-Pedic, a foam mattress, and several inner-spring mattresses. I have also tried both thick and thin memory foam toppers, a featherbed topper, and a latex topper, and still get back pain and toss and turn, mostly from pressure points. I don’t like the fact that sleep number beds have that barrier in the middle, so I am considering a Dux.

Should You Purchase a Memory Foam Mattress Or a Memory Foam Mattress Pad?

If you are entering the market and looking for a new mattress you’ve more than likely come across those made with memory foam. Memory foam is gaining popularity by leaps and bounds. It is actually catching up, in popularity, with other types of mattresses such as the innerspring, latex, or air mattresses. A problem that most people run into is the cost of the memory foam mattress. The top of a line foam mattresses tend to run anywhere from $1000 to $6000. For most people looking for a new mattress, this is outside of their budget. So there are a few ways to approach this dilemma. If the bed that you currently sleep on is not so old that you have to throw it out you can purchase a memory foam mattress topper to put on top of it. Or, because of the increasing popularity of the memory foam mattress and the increasing amount of manufacturers that produce it, the price of these mattresses is beginning to fall. So you can find a medium to higher quality memory foam mattress for around $500.

Your Current Bed

Deciding whether not you want to purchase an entire mattress or just a mattress pad can be determined by evaluating your current bed. If your current bed still provides solid support and has only lost a little bit of comfort, you could add a memory foam mattress topper to it to greatly increase the comfort level.

If your mattress is at a stage where it’s lumpy and uncomfortable it may be too far gone for any mattress pad. The mattress pad will reflect the condition of the mattress beneath it. So if you have a lumpy mattress beneath the mattress pad it will also be lumpy. If there is a sag in the middle of the mattress then you want to replace it anyway. A sag or dip in the middle of the mattress can lead to painful problems for your spine (such as neck and back disorders).

So if your current bed still provides a decent level of support you can simply add a mattress topper to it. Mattress toppers provide an affective amount of comfort and support and a cost just a fraction of what a full size memory foam mattress costs.

If you’ve made the decision to go with the topper then what you’ll need to do next is decide what it is exactly that you need to purchase. There are three things you need to consider when purchasing a topper (the same three things you’d need to consider if buying a mattress) which are thickness, density, and softness.

Depending on the support or nature of your current mattress you may want to choose a topper that offers anywhere from 1 inch to 4 inches of thickness. Keep in mind the size that you choose because standard sheets are not designed to cover a mattress that is more than 10 inches in thickness. A topper that is 2 inches thick should be enough to provide the comfort and support that you need.

So base your decision on whether or not you need to purchase a pad or a mattress on how your current bed offers comfort and support.

How To Buy A Memory Foam Mattress

Buying a memory foam mattress can initially seem confusing due to the huge range now available and difference in price between the cheapest and most expensive. However, it’s actually quite easy once you know how to tell the difference between a cheap imitation and a quality memory foam mattress.

Unfortunately there are manufacturers who will exploit a potential buyer’s lack of knowledge about memory foam by using inferior foam at low prices (but at a good profit for them!) If it’s cheap then it usually isn’t a good buy as it won’t last or give good support – and it will probably start to smell if it’s not breathable.

It’s not just the quality of the memory foam that determines the quality of the mattress. The construction and other materials used will make the difference between an okay mattress and a superb one. Here are our tips on what to look for when buying a memory foam mattress that will ensure you get the best product for your budget.

Density
If you can afford it, buy foam with a high density as this will give you the longest service and best support. Any foam with a density higher than 4.5 lbs is preferable, avoid foam with a density of lower than 3 lbs. Low density foam will quickly lose its shape as it will be unable to return to its original shape. When you roll over in your sleep you’ll want to have a mattress that will quickly adjust to your new position – it’s much more comfortable.

Breathe Easy
We all sweat when asleep, not a pleasant truth but it’s a fact. If a mattress doesn’t have vents or breathable materials it could become the ideal breeding ground for bacteria and organisms that won’t smell too good! A quality mattress will accommodate this by allowing air to enter and escape the surrounding support structures and foam. Buying a mattress with a washable cover can also be a benefit.

Temperature Sensitive
Once your body sinks into the memory foam your temperature will then cause the foam closest to you to soften thus creating the unique support and comfort associated with it. This also prevents the sensation of sleeping in a hole that some people believe could happen.

Check The Layers
There’s no use having very high density foam if it’s only one inch thick. So in addition to the quality and density you’ll need to look at the depths and layers used. Good quality mattress are made up of layers offering both support for your body and support for the foam so it can maintain its shape. A typical quality mattress will have a top layer of very high density foam about two or three inches thick followed by a similar thickness of high density foam. A base, often made of latex, of around four inches thick will provide a solid base so the foam won’t slide and lose its shape.

What’s It Made of?
And lastly, there’s memory foam and then there’s memory foam! Some manufacturers use poor quality foams that can give off toxic gases! The glues used to bond the layers together can also be toxic and may cause allergic reactions. If your budget permits always look to buy products made from natural materials.
